The county of Cambridgeshire, or Cambs for short, borders seven other counties: Essex, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. The county town is the university town of Cambridge. Cambridgeshire is predominantly a flat county with the highest point being just 146 meters above sea level (in the village of Great Chishill).
Originally the land was mostly marsh and fenland, not much use to anyone but high in the nutrients that produce excellent farmland. Following the introduction of a lattice-work of trenches and canals the land was allowed to drain and dry up, leaving the nutrient-rich black soil which to this day produces high quality crops. It also produces excellent grazing for the high quality dairy farms operating within the county.
